What if some of the ideas that transformed healthcare in the American South came not from the United States, but from apartheid-era South Africa?

A Road Out uncovers the remarkable, little-known story of six South African health pioneers whose work in rural KwaZulu-Natal helped reshape community medicine in the United States. Working closely with Zulu communities, these doctors came to understand that health could not be separated from poverty, racism and the social conditions in which people lived. Their innovative approach placed entire communities—not just individual patients—at the centre of healthcare.

When apartheid forced these pioneering physicians to leave South Africa, they carried their ideas with them to the American South. There, amid the Civil Rights Movement and President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty, their experiences helped inspire new approaches to public health and the creation of the first community health centre in Mound Bayou, Mississippi.

Through archival photographs and footage, interviews and personal stories, Karin Shapiro's documentary reveals a remarkable transatlantic exchange of ideas and a powerful chapter in the history of public health—one that demonstrates what can happen when medicine is built on trust, community and equity.
