Give as a gift
Separated as infants and raised by different adoptive families across Canada, four siblings meet for the first time as adults and begin the extraordinary journey of discovering one another — and the family they lost.
Birth of a Family follows three sisters and a brother, all members of the Dene Nation, as they come together decades after being taken from their biological mother during Canada's Sixties Scoop. As they share memories and piece together fragments of their childhoods, they confront the profound impact of being separated from their Indigenous heritage, culture and one another.
With remarkable honesty and tenderness, the siblings explore questions of identity, belonging, loss and reconciliation. Their reunion is both joyful and painful as they begin to understand what was taken from them and, together, create a new sense of family.
Tasha Hubbard's deeply personal documentary is ultimately a story of resilience, connection and the enduring power of family to heal old wounds.
