Mbira Talks provides a rare glimpse into rural life in Zimbabwe and has many universal themes around migration and reclamation and healing of post-colonial trauma. Moyo is part of a movement of Zimbabweans at home and abroad who are reconnecting with their indigenous identity that was lost in the fire of colonialism.
Moyo’s story gradually unfolds, as he gathers around a fire in Toronto on his son’s 18th birthday with family and friends. As he tells us about his life in Zimbabwe, we travel back with him to the rural village where he was born, find out how meeting indigenous people in University in Canada and playing Mbira started him on his journey of reclaiming his indigeneity, see the learning village that he created in Zimbabwe and hear about the incredible obstacles that he has overcome. His intelligence, sensitivity and indomitable spirit are central to the film.
We witness Moyo’s struggle of living suspended between two vastly different worlds and how he has managed to preserve his identity in North America and pass on his cultural heritage to his sons by speaking to them in Shona, creating community, making traditional food and incorporating mbira into their lives. Mbira Talks authentically tackles the effects of colonization and the reclamation of indigeneity into everyday life.
