At this pivotal time in Canada’s history, we are being asked to confront the tragic effects of the Residential School policy on Indigenous people. SAFF Canada and EwB approached Iakotsén:tha, Heather Royal Brant and asked her to assist with the creation of a meaningful Land Acknowledgement. The result is a sharing of the Ohén:ton Karihwatéhkwen, 'The Words Before All Else', an address that is ancient in origins that brings our minds together to offer respect and gratitude, not only for the land and people, but for all that supports the web of life. These words passed down generationally by our ancestors teach us how to acknowledge the land and everything that sustains our lives every day.

We hope you will find this video equally meaningful.

The Land Acknowledgement video was created by Heather Royal Brant and Zsofin Sheehy (8 minutes). Heather is Mohawk from the Bay of Quinte/Tyendinaga, (Kaienkeha'ka/Irish heritage) and lives on the traditional Unceded territory of K'ómoks Nation, Sla-dai-aich, also known as Denman Island. Zsofin Sheehy (videographer) lives on Hornby Island.

In 2021 and 2022, EwB continued its support for the Seabird Island Band Outdoor Education Program. Learn more about EwB’s programs supporting Indigenous youth projects at: https://www.educationwithoutborders.ca/programs
