Topaze is a 1928 satirical play on corruption and ambition by the French writer Marcel Pagnol. It tells the story of a modest school teacher who is fired for being too honest and who slowly becomes a dishonest businessman. The play was a huge success when premiered at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris... and several film adaptations were produced including two directed by Pagnol himself... We will look at two versions: The 1933 version with Louis Jouvet (on 12th July) and the 1961 version with Peter Sellers (on 19th July).
