Sands Films Cinema Club season of screen adaptations of the work of Emile Zola.

Julien Duvivier is one of the most prolific and technically proficient filmmakers in cinema history, idolized by the likes of directors Jean Renoir, Ingmar Bergman, and Orson Welles. For a time, he was among cinema’s most celebrated directors and he is still very well known for classics such as “Pépé le Moko” or “La Belle Equipe“. His silents films are not well known: yet Duvivier’s expressive use of the camera was primarily created under the influence of poetic realist style – before the introduction of sound. This 1930 adaptation of Zola's Au Bonheur des Dames is his last silent film.

Starring Dita Parlo in the role of Denise, an orphaned girl, who moves to Paris where she hopes to find work at her uncle's store. But the glamorous department store 'Aux Bonheur des Dames' across the street crunches all the little businesses around. She finds a position there.
