REMBRANDT
Dir Alexandre Korda
Korda's finest work as a director, it stars Charles Laughton in a powerhouse performance as the 17th-century Dutch master. The films begins in 1642 at the height of the painter's fame, just as his beloved wife Saskia dies. The story follows his subsequent professional decline—sparked by the "scandalous" reception of his masterpiece, The Night Watch—and his descent into poverty and social isolation. Despite his struggles with debt and the loss of his second partner, Hendrickje, the film portrays Rembrandt as an artist of unyielding integrity who remains dedicated to his vision until his death in 1669.
Rembrandt
