The programme starts with Robert Schumann’s song cycle Dichterliebe (Poet’s Love), Op. 48, completed in 1840. It comprises 16 poems by Heinrich Heine for solo voice and piano. The cycle runs the gamut of emotions, tenderness, rapturous love, loss, happy memories, bitter memories, anger and finally at the end of it all, the piano concludes the cycle with a long passage conveying some relief from sadness and anger. The second work in the programme is Clara Schumann’s poignant and contemplative Romance in A minor for piano dedicated to Johannes Brahms.

The programme concludes with selection of impassioned songs by German composer, Richard Strauss including Zueignung, Traum durch die Dämmerung, Heimliche Aufforderung, Allerseelen and Befreit.
