My Favorite War: An animated memoir of a soviet childhood, and an antiwar film that emphasizes the importance of an individual’s right to freedom in a democratic society.
This is the personal story of the director, Ilze, growing up in Cold-War Latvia, USSR. It’s a coming of age story, a personal escape route from the mighty authoritarian regime’s brainwashing. The film not only recounts the events Ilze lived through, it also depicts the fractured experience of living in a reality that is denied in propaganda, and the heartbreak of learning people she loves believe in things she hates. An antiwar film, emphasizing the importance of an individual’s freedom being a democratic society’s fundamental right.
