Based on real events, in Austria 2015, and Ireland 2019, Song Sparrow is about the tragic events that befall a group of refugees attempting to reach a safe country. Their hopes of living with some modicum of safety are dashed after temperatures in a freezer truck smuggling the group across borders threatens their lives and makes their journey into yet another fierce struggle for survival.

Song Sparrow is a short documentary about refugees embarking on a journey to find a place they can call home, or even just a place they can live their lives with some modicum of safety. The story it tells is one of many in which the perils of fleeing a dangerous country may be more formidable than the ones they are running from in the first place.'

An SDFF exclusive Q+A between director Farzaneh Omidvarnia and SDFF co-director and lead programmer Jean McGlothlin is available now. Watch it here!
