It could be called the vanners’ Woodstock of the midwest, but it’s not, it’s Sleeze Lake. It’s 1977 and the community of misfits, adventurers, outcasts, and hippie counterculture van lifers are organizing, as much as a bunch of shag carpet custom van-living hippies will organize. Always on the hunt for their next adventure and opportunity for hedonism and tomfoolery, the midwest van club called Midwest Vans Ltd. scouted a location about 100 miles outside of Chicago as the perfect site for the biggest van party you’ve never heard of. Around the property’s small pond, dubbed “Sleeze Lake,” the club built up a ramshackle resort town complete with bars, strip clubs, casinos, jails, and barbershops. And for the disenfranchised youth living life on the open road, it was van life at its lowest and best.
