Phases of Matter is set in Istanbul’s Cerrahpasa Hospital, a unique, state-run teaching hospital where the filmmaker himself was born. Passing through the hospital's darkened corridors, from the morgue, operating theatre to the rooms containing vital-signs monitors and X-ray machines, this immersive documentary observes a place where life and death, levity and severity, poetry and confrontation exist side by side.
