In Mónica Taboada-Tapia’s striking and heartfelt film a transgender Wayúu woman embarks on a journey across the Colombian desert to reclaim her identity, confront her past and fight for justice.

Georgina, a transgender woman in her seventies and a member of Colombia's indigenous Wayúu tribe, sets out across the vast, sun-scorched landscapes of La Guajira. After years of solitude and waiting for official recognition, she has decided to reunite with the family that once rejected her and fight to overcome the bureaucratic maze that has kept her people in the shadows. As she traverses the desert, Georgina’s story becomes one of resilience – standing up for the right to assert her identity and end the struggle against systemic oppression. Soul of the Desert is a poetic and moving documentary road movie that captures the beauty of defiance and the power of reclaiming one’s place in the world.
