A Case Study on Funding the Film “Drive Back Home”:
The Dark Side of Independent Film Financing in Canada
Friday, November 15, 2024, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Drive Back Home had a budget of about 2.5M and was funded by Telefilm Ontario, Ontario Creates, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, a bit of private money and an insane amount of volunteer labour by some incredibly talented people. In this workshop/discussion, Clowater will take you through the pitfalls of choosing the wrong producers to work with and some of his hard-fought lessons in how to stick up for your vision.
Michael Clowater is a Toronto based commercial filmmaker who has directed multimillion- dollar commercials for such brands as Heinekin, Samsung, Cheerios, IKEA, TD, President’s choice, Volkswagon, Subaru, Pizza Hut and many others. His ads have won multiple international awards an have appeared on the US and Canadian Superbowl broadcasts. His first (and so far only) feature film won the audience award for best Canadian feature at CIFF and the Artistic Director’s award at the San Diego int’l film festival. It will play next at the Palm Springs International film festival in January and will be released in Canadian theatres on December 6, 2024. Clowater grew up on the north side of Fredericton and began his career at his family’s business in plumbing and heating before joining the NB Filmmaker’s Co-op in the mid 90s.
