Celebrated Academy Award®-nominated director Mamoru Hosoda has long been interested in stories that explore growing up and in his latest film Belle, he tackles the subject by introducing us to Suzy, a shy high school student who lives an alternate life on social media. In this hour-long conversation, Hosoda discusses everything from the concept of the new film and some of the common themes that appear throughout his projects, to working with Cartoon Saloon and what his next project would be if money was no object. After graduating from Kanazawa Art College, Hosoda joined Toei Doga (now Toei Animation Co., Ltd.) as an animator. In 1997, he made his directorial debut with the popular animation TV series GeGeGe no Kitarō (4th season). In 1999, he directed his first animated film Digimon Adventure but it was with his second go for Digimon Adventure: Our War Game that he began to gain notoriety. He then became a freelancer and, in 2006, he directed the film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which was not only a huge success in Japan but also further afield. It was widely distributed and even won an award at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France. In 2009, he directed Summer Wars, the first “geek” family film, which is still a culture reference point for the younger generation today. In 2011, he founded his own animation studio called Studio Chizu with his long-time producer Yuichiro Saito. The first film to come out of this young studio was The Wolf Children (2014) and subsequently the Boy and the Beast (2016), which confirmed Hosoda’s immense popularity in Japan and further afield. With Mirai, Hosoda’s animation talent gained international recognition. The initial goal was to share information about the Dutch film industry, but during his visits to film festivals he discovered he was actually more interested in Asian cinema in general. Japanese animation is one of his favorite topics. Currently he is one of the European Editors of Screen Anarchy, and is a contributing writer for the Dutch genre film magazine Schokkend Nieuws. Animating on all 48 shorts led to directing the first shows of the series. Starting with the Christmas Special in December 1989, and then the premiere episode the following month, he soon became Supervising Animation Director and a producer on the show. All told, he has directed 24 episodes and has won 4 Emmys along the way. When no one was looking, he snuck away from The Simpsons to work at DreamWorks (The Road to El Dorado&nbsp;– co-director), Pixar (Monsters, Inc. – co-director), and Blue Sky (Ice Age, Robots&nbsp;– writing and boarding). But, he came back to the show full-time at the end of 2003 and directed&nbsp;The Simpsons Movie, released in 2007. In 2012, David directed and co-wrote the short film&nbsp;The Longest Daycare, which went on to earn him an Academy Award nomination. Two more Maggie shorts followed,&nbsp;Playdate with Destiny&nbsp;(2020), and&nbsp;The Force Awakens from Its Nap&nbsp;(2021). Also, this year David directed&nbsp;The Good, the Bart, and the Loki&nbsp;for Disney+, and the special “half episode” for Balenciaga, released on YouTube 10/02/2021. The ’90s marked a period of success for Walt Disney Feature Animation. Commonly referred to as the “Disney Renaissance,” the period included the release of numerous classics including The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty &amp; the Beast, among many others. He guest lectures at Microsoft, Deloitte, Apple, Google and is on the advisory board of the Walt Disney Family Museum and a former trustee of PBS SoCal. He holds two Academy Award nominations, two Emmy nominations, two Golden Globes for Best Picture, two Honorary Doctorate degrees, and often orders the two tacos for 99¢ special at his local drive-thru. He was instrumental in shaping the structure and dialogue for the six Disney animated features previous to The Lion King, serving as Head of Story on Oliver &amp; Company and Beauty &amp; the Beast and contributing to The Little Mermaid. The Prince &amp; the Pauper, The Rescuers Down Under, and Aladdin in senior story capacity. He co-wrote the book for the Broadway musical The Lion King with Irene Mecchi, for which they were nominated for a Tony award in 1998. He also directed the animated short The Little Match Girl, based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale and set to the music of Borodin. It was nominated for an Academy Award in 2006. Prior to Disney, Allers worked in animation in Boston, Toronto, and Tokyo on children’s education shows and feature films, including Nelvana’s Rock &amp; Rule, Tokyo Movie Shinsha’s Litlle Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, and development work for TRON. Post-Disney, Allers co-directed Open Season for Sony Pictures Animation. In an independent production headed up by Salma Hyack, Roger Allers wrote and directed the animated feature The Prophet, adapted from the 1923 philosophical book by Kahlil Gibran. Presently, he is engaged in writing an original musical for the Broadway stage. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/3e1c0a3edb0816afd2999a7746048abc.png"><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/44074a7df60877bac3ab19086c399b6c.png" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;">Kirk WiseDirector // Independent(Bobbleheads: The Movie, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beaty &amp; the Beast) Growing up in Palo Alto CA, Kirk took a summer community centre course in animation while still in elementary school, and soon he was creating his own Super-8 animated films. After graduating from Palo Alto High School, Kirk submitted his portfolio to CalArts and was accepted. After graduation, Kirk worked in various capacities on multiple animated projects, including Sport Goofy in Soccermania, The Brave Little Toaster, Family Dog, The Great Mouse Detective, and Oliver &amp; Company. He eventually segued from animation into storyboarding at Walt Disney Feature Animation. It was there that he was reunited with former CalArts classmate Gary Trousdale. Due to a creative shakeup on the still-in-preproduction Beauty &amp; the Beast, Wise and Trousdale were offered the chance to direct their first feature-length film, teaming with the Oscar-winning songwriting duo Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Kirk and Gary’s directorial debut became a worldwide box-office sensation, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Picture (the first-ever for a feature-length animated film). Wise and Trousdale teamed up to direct two more animated features for Disney, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Atlantis the Lost Empire. Kirk eventually branched out into live-action projects as well, serving as an Executive Producer on Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, and as Creative Consultant on DisneyNature’s Chimpanzee. He also directed the live-action educational short Disney History Connections: Colonial America for Disney Educational Productions. Kirk has recently completed his first 100% CGI-animated feature Bobbleheads: The Movie for Universal 1440 Entertainment, which premiered worldwide on Netflix and DVD in December of 2020. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/260f8dc2498947fe677e2efa326e9446.png"><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/f6ce6f0ee1c7eb291356c4cdca3cb33d.png" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;">Gary TrousdaleDirector // Independent(The Power of I, Atlantis: The Last Empire, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty &amp; the Beast) Gary Trousdale is a Southern Californian, raised in La Crescenta and educated at Crescenta Valley High School, Glendale College, and the California Institute of the Arts (in that order.) One would think that the road between CalArts and helming the iconic Disney feature Beauty &amp; the Beast would be wide, smooth and straight, but one would be wrong. Gary didn’t get into Disney until he had worked at Tom Carter Animation and a small illustration studio for the better part of two years. As he describes it, the Mouse House wasn’t pre-disposed to hire him straight out of CA, and so he learned his trade in smaller, lower-paying venues. When Mr. Trousdale finally did find his way to Disney, it was as an effects artist on The Black Cauldron, and even then his path was winding. Gary Trousdale expected to be laid off from the House of Mouse at the end of The Black Cauldron, but a series of in-house effects jobs kept him at Disney until his jokey cartoons, and a recommendation from Joe Ranft, helped boost him into Disney Feature Animation’s story department. Becoming a feature animation director was another promotion that was far from pre-ordained. Gary and Kirk Wise were made “temporary” directors on Beauty &amp; the Beast after the original directors left the project. It was only after months of work that they became “official,” and the rest, as they say, is animation history. After Beauty &amp; the Beast, Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise became a Disney directing team through the rest of the 1990s. After Atlantis: the Lost Empire (released by Disney in 2001), Gary moved to DreamWorks Animation where he has written, directed and storyboarded. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/69277953f574a0addedda1879636343b.png">Ron ClementsDirector(Moana, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid) Ron Clements is a renowned director, storyteller, and filmmaker from Walt Disney Animation Studios. With his longtime collaborator, John Musker, Clements has written and directed iconic feature films that have become part of Disney’s legacy, including beloved classics like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Moana. Clements began his career at Hanna-Barbera, then afterward transferred into Disney’s Talent Development Program where for two years he was mentored by the animation legend, Frank Thomas. He quickly progressed through the ranks at Disney, working on such films as Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, The Rescuers, Pete’s Dragon, The Fox and the Hound, and The Black Cauldron. In 1986, Clements made his writing-directing debut with Musker on the feature The Great Mouse Detective. Clements recently retired from Walt Disney Animation Studios. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/3c34d1d390995a3212ebe88eeaa96889.png"><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/38f067d0ad29d5e0ca545d854393470b.png" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;">John MuskerDirector // Independent(Moana, The Princess and the Frog, Treasure Planet, Hercules, Alladin, The Little Mermaid) John Musker is a 40-year veteran of the Walt Disney Animation Studios where he was an animator, storyboard artist, writer, director and producer. John grew up in Chicago, Illinois as part of a large Irish Catholic family. He followed up his English Literature studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, with two years at CalArts as part of the new Character Animation Program in the mid-seventies, where he learned not only from Disney and Chouinard veterans like Elmer Plummer, Bill Moore, and Ken O’Connor, but also his fellow classmates there, many who have gone on to direct distinguished films: folks like Brad Bird, Henry Selick, John Lasseter, Tim Burton and Chris Buck. At Disney, he was mentored by Eric Larson, the veteran animator and one of Disney’s fabled “Nine Old Men,” who brought Figaro the cat to life in Pinocchio, among many other characters in his distinguished career. John became an animator on The Fox &amp; the Hound (1981) and later joined Ron Clements to direct The Great Mouse Detective (1986), alongside Disney veterans Burny Mattinson and Dave Michener. Ron and John paired up to write and direct The Little Mermaid (1989) which John co-produced with Howard Ashman. Ron and John also wrote and directed a number of subsequent animated features including Aladdin (1992), Hercules (1997), Treasure Planet (2002) and The Princess and the Frog (2009). John’s most recent project was Moana (2016), which he once again directed with Ron Clements, along with co-directors Don Hall and Chris Williams. John is busy chasing around his two granddaughters, sisters Lucy (nearly 5) and Gwen (nearly 3). In his youth, his interest in drawing and animation was magnified while watching his 8mm film collection, which included Disney's Sleeping Beauty (1959). Slowing the films down, he studied the action one frame at a time. He furthered his personal education on the subject after discovering the book The Art of Walt Disney at a friend's house. When his head wasn't swimming in animation, Rob worked in theatre, performing for numerous groups including the Palo Alto Children's Theater, Theater Works and his high school dramatic group. Following graduation, the decision to attend CalArts in Valencia and pursue his dream of becoming an animator was coming to fruition. In 1982, he served an internship at Disney and had a chance to train with one of the studio's legendary "Nine Old Men," Eric Larson. A year later, Rob was hired by Disney and began to work on his first assignment, The Black Cauldron (1985), followed by The Great Mouse Detective (1986). The next few years, he worked on various aspects of Disney's feature films such as developing and writing for a variety of animated features, including a song for Oliver &amp; Company (1988), character designs for The Little Mermaid (1989), and an early treatment for Beauty &amp; the Beast (1991). He made his directing debut on a couple of animated shorts starring Roger Rabbit, such as Tummy Trouble followed by Roller Coaster Rabbit. He landed the chance to direct a feature film in the early 1990s with Disney's The Lion King (1994). Following the success of The Lion King, Rob left Disney to work with Columbia where he released the popular Stuart Little films (1999 and 2002), based on a mouse who lives as an equal family member with a group of kindly humans. The films mix live-action and computer animation. His next few films were live-action, including The Haunted Mansion (2003) starring Eddie Murphy; The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) starring Jackie Chan and Jet Li; and Flypaper (2011) starring Patrick Dempsey and Ashley Judd. Through their company A-Line Pictures, Weintraub and his partner/wife Caroline Baron recently produced the feature film Bel Canto, which Anthony adapted - with director Paul Weitz - from the bestselling novel by Ann Patchett. Celebrating 15 Years of Tekkonkinkreet

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera changed animation forever when they founded Hanna-Barbera Productions in the late 1950s. The studio was a prominent fixture on American TV for half a century with hit shows like The Flinstones, The Yogi Bear Show, The Jetsons, Johnny Quest, Scooby-Doo and many, many more. Join legendary animators Willie Ito and Floyd Norman as the pair revisit their careers at the studio and share details on the production process which Hanna-Barbera revolutionized. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/cb5fe9480024ac79a2c20ed2e6d8b058.png"> SPEAKERS <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/dc8588139f726f386c25833f17355668.png"><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/8d4d3c74f748cc6dc7cfa667a790c90c.png" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;">Willie ItoAnimator Sitting in front of a big screen at a neighbourhood theatre, a 5-year-old Willie Ito saw for the first time what cemented his lifetime career in the field of animated cartooning. Snow White &amp; the Seven Dwarfs in living colour made such an impression, he drew constantly. During his wartime incarceration, which was ordered for 120,000 Japanese Americans, he spent many hours just drawing and animating on margins of Sears catalogues to create his own flipbook. After 3 years in the camp, he and his family returned home to San Francisco. He continued to hone his drawing skills in High School and college. His professor in college encouraged him to attend Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Willie's career started there at Disney as Iwo’s assistant where his first assignment was the iconic spaghetti kissing scene from Lady &amp; the Tramp. He later went on to Warner Bros. starting at the infamous ‘Termite Terrace’ with directors Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng. Some of the classics that he was involved with were What’s Opera Doc, One Froggy Evening, Pepe Le Pew, Daffy Duck and the ever favourite Coyote Roadrunner series. Willie also did layouts and stories for Dr. Frank Baxter’s Science series. Friz Freleng borrowed him from Chuck Jones to lay out a short under Hawley Pratt’s mentorship. Willie received his first-ever screen credit as a layout artist on Prince Violence, later retitled Prince Varmit directed by Friz Freleng. Bob Clampett who was starting production on his Time for Beany show invited Willie to join his studio. Willie converted his puppet characters into animation and the Beany and Cecil show went into production. Next followed a 14-year employment with Hanna-Barbera working on classic shows like The Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi Bear and Scooby-Doo. Amongst his many career accomplishments, Willie did many comic books, comic strips, children's books and cartoon illustrations. In a career that spanned over 50 years, Willie Ito is still active at the drawing board producing his animated version of his book Hello Maggie. Floyd Norman has been working in the entertainment business longer than he cares to admit. He began his professional career while still in high school, working as an assistant on Archie Comics. He polished his skills as a comic artist on Katy Keene the Fashion Queen. Enrolling in Art Center College of Design in the early fifties, he eventually dropped out of school when offered an entry-level position at Walt Disney Studios. Floyd learned his animation ropes doing the tedious, grunt work of an apprentice animation artist. By the sixties, he suddenly found himself in Disney’s prestigious story department, and even worked with Walt Disney on The Jungle Book. After that remarkable experience, his life has never been the same. When the company founder died in the late sixties, Floyd decided to leave the studio. He and his partners formed their own production company to produce educational media. Many exciting projects passed through the studio doors, and it was a great learning experience for the fledgling filmmakers. Of course, there were many jobs to follow. Television commercials, animated segments for Laugh In, Sesame Street, Via Allegra, and the syncopated Soul Train. Then, there was a seven-year stint at Hanna-Barbera crafting The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo and many other kid shows designed to sell toys and sugared cereal. Returning to Walt Disney Animation Studios in the nineties, Floyd developed The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Chinese legend, Mulan. However, after completing story work on additional animated films, he made the decision to move north to Pixar Animation Studios. While there, he developed the screen story for Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc. By the year 2000, it was time to retire, but Floyd chose to ignore the lawn chair and continued to work. Wearing his retiree badge, he came to work every day, even though he was no longer employed. Floyd illustrated children’s books and worked on toys and games in the Consumer Products Division. After completing a number of special animated film segments for Walt Disney Animation Studios and a short-form movie for Disney Parks &amp; Resorts, the studio bosses realized he wasn’t going to go away. Hanna-Barbera & the Evolution of Animation

You may not realize it, but FernGully: The Last Rainforest was a movie full of firsts; not only was it one of the first animated features to mix traditional and computer animation, one of the first films produced with remote artists, Robin Williams’ first animated role, but also the first film ever to be shown at the UN General Assembly. Celebrate 30 years of FernGully with some of the team behind the animated classic, which carries a message as important today as it was three decades ago. Bill began his animation career in 1975 at a small commercial studio. By 1977, he was an animator working under the Nine Old Men at Disney Studios. There, he met director Steven Lisberger, who was working on&nbsp;Animalympics and with whom he would collaborate on&nbsp;Tron. Thereafter, Bill decided to pursue computer animation instead of traditional animation while at Robert Abel and Associates and Digital Productions. In 1986, he and his wife Susan started&nbsp;Kroyer Films, Inc.&nbsp;where they developed their pioneering “combo” technique, bringing together computer animation and hand-drawn animation. In his 25 years at Pixar, he was responsible for foundational technologies including RIDIY, the dynamic scene description filtering and transformation system that was a building block for the entire rendering pipeline. He was also active in looks development and execution of many main characters and sets as well as rendering optimizations for massively complex scenes. He was also part of a team of production engineers overseeing the shading pipeline, integrating in-house and third-party tools over an ever-evolving technology platform. In the art world, he is the creator of Snapshot, the new opera series produced in collaboration with West Edge Opera and Earplay that presents developing works from Bay Area composers. The San Francisco Chronicle's Joshua Kosman has called recent programs "...a marvellous achievement" and the program an "invaluable" addition to the San Francisco art scene. He was also instrumental in envisioning and implementing the online virtual residency commissioning program Aperture, where he serves as a curator. Brian is also a prolific composer, having contributed his talents within Pixar as well as working with the New York choral ensemble, Choral Chameleon, as well as his 10-year tenure as the songwriter and music director for the Webby award-winning a cappella ensemble, The Richter Scales. His choral series The Google Variations uses Google Translate technology to transform classic poetry into modernist text which he then set for voices. His mini-opera/theatre piece Death of a Playboy explores the legacy of Hugh Hefner through the eyes of a rueful former playmate asked to speak at his funeral. Brian is also active with Burning Man as a shift lead with the Black Rock Rangers, a large team of volunteers that circulates throughout the 80,000 person city 24 hours a day. At DreamWorks, her talents contributed to The Prince of Egypt, Spirit, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, as well as FernGully, Cats Don’t Dance, Cool World, and SpongeBob: Sponge Out of Water. Her live-action credits include Mrs. Doubtfire, Captain America, Wolverine, Pacific Rim, Iron Man 3, X-Men, and Mary Poppins Returns. Torill has adapted four of her animated films to picture books, and also made a wordless picture book about two cats who get caught up in their owners’ custody battle. As an illustrator, she has collaborated with several Norwegian writers. Torill is now working on a new animated short, which she will finish as soon as she can. The Danish Poet: Revisiting the Creative Well with Director Torill Kove

Andreas Deja worked at Walt Disney Feature Animation as a supervising animator for 30 years and is credited with work on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid (King Triton), Beauty &amp; the Beast, (Gaston), Aladdin (Jafar), The Lion King (Scar), Hercules (Hercules), Lilo &amp; Stitch (Lilo), The Princess &amp; the Frog (Mama Odie), among others. Andreas is currently finishing production on his independently produced 1/2 hour hand-drawn film Mushka, the story of a story about a Russian girl and a Siberian Tiger. Now a creative advisor to Walt Disney Imagineering, Baxter completed his full-time career as senior vice president of Creative Development in 2013. In his new role, Baxter continues to provide creative ideas and input for Disney attractions and theme parks around the world. Baxter began his Disney career in 1965 at Disneyland while completing his education at California State University, Long Beach, graduating in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in theatre design. As part of his portfolio, he presented a precisely engineered model of a “Marble Maze” to executives at Walt Disney Imagineering, and impressed by his talent, Imagineering hired Baxter in l970 as a dimensional designer. He was sent to Florida to work on the Walt Disney World Resort, which opened in 1971. In 1989, he was appointed senior vice president responsible for the concept development, design and creation of an entirely new theme park, Disneyland Paris (1992). He continued to provide creative direction for new shows and enhancements at Disneyland in California, including the Indiana Jones Adventure, which opened in l995, and the major redevelopment of Tomorrowland that opened in May 1998. In 2007, he led the Finding Nemo creative team in the reinvention of the Submarines at Disneyland, blending hi-tech CG animation into an actual underwater environment, while maintaining sound sync to vehicles in motion. Since then Tony has continued to keep Disneyland up to date with technical breakthroughs in the audio animatronics applied to Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, reconceptualized the Sleeping Beauty Castle walk-through and recently completed the Princess Fantasy Fair. In his new role as Advisor to Imagineering, he has a patent pending on a new racing ride system that will pit 48 riders against one another in a racing simulation. Nelvana: Behind the Studio

Please join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes fly-through tour of the Academy Museum. The Museum campus is comprised of the restored and revitalized historic Saban Building—formerly known as the May Company building (1939)—and a soaring spherical addition that houses the 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the Academy Museum’s seven floors feature exhibition spaces, education and special event spaces, a conservation studio, a café, a museum store and the 288-seat Ted Mann Theater.&nbsp; The tour provides an in-depth overview of the Museum’s opening exhibitions, including interview segments with Spike Lee, Rita Moreno, Pedro Almodovar and more. We’ll also learn about the Museum’s plans for a year-round calendar of screenings, film series, member programs, panel discussions, family programs, and symposia. She began her career in Los Angeles working for Castle Rock Entertainment at the corporate level, then as a production accountant on Misery and City Slickers. She has more than twenty years of experience working in fundraising, mostly on the east coast in the field of education, including nine years at Cornell University. Prior to joining the Academy Museum, Barbara worked for Bill Nye at The Planetary Society in Pasadena.
