Harem by Daniel D Negatu is the winner of the inaugural MENA Canada Filmmaking Grant. MENA, along with our partner organization Movies Move Us, provided $5,000 in seed funding toward the production of a short film of any genre and style, with the result to premiere at the 2021 MENA Film Festival in November.

We are proud to be able to present the resulting film to all our audiences at this year's festival free of charge, in the hopes that it helps to scatter the MENA/SWANA stories that have taken root in Canada to a global audience. Congratulations, Daniel, on this achievement!

Harem is the story of a Kurdish visual artist trying to make a new life in Canada while also balancing the nostalgia for his home country and loved ones.

Drawing parallels between the precarious nature of the creative process and making a life in a new country, this film uses Harem’s art to reimagine his experiences, fears, and hopes of one day living a good life in Canada with his wife and mother who are still back in Iraq.
