Mizna presents a discussion with acclaimed filmmaker Ayten Amin. Amin directed the opening night film of Mizna's Arab Film Fest, Souad (2021), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. This pre-recorded discussion is moderated by scholar Sonali Pahwa.

About the Panelists


Ayten Amin has been working in the film industry for the past 12 years. Her first short film Her Man was selected by Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival, and after receiving several national prizes, it was exclusively acquired by Canal Plus in France. In 2013, her debut feature film Villa 69 received the Special Jury Award for Arab Film at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. Amin has received multiple prestigious awards and recognitions, including the Cairo Film Connection Award for Best Film or Hubert Bals Award at Durban FilmMart. She co-directed the documentary Tahrir 2011 (2011), which was selected at Venice International Film Festival and TIFF, and the film was nominated for Best Documentary in Cinema For Peace award Berlin 2012. 





Sonali Pahwa is Associate Professor of Theatre Arts & Dance at the University of Minnesota. An anthropologist of theatre and performance, she is the author of titled Theaters of Citizenship: Aesthetics and Politics of Avant-Garde Performance in Egypt (Northwestern University Press, 2020). Her recent research on social media performance explores the use of YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok in the Arab Gulf countries.
