By turns sweet and melancholy, Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit’s ingenious debut feature is a meditation on the nature of memory in the digital age. Constructed of just 36 shots—the same number of pictures as on a roll of film—it tells the story of Sai, a movie location scout who learns that memories captured with the click of a digital camera can just as easily be lost. When her hard disk crashes and deletes a year’s worth of photos, including shots of a would-be lover with whom she spent a memorable day, Sai sets out to recover her ephemeral digital memories. Winner of the FIPRESCRI Prize and the New Currents Award at the Busan International Film Festival, as well as the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, 36 “will cast a spell on viewers who click into its languid and quietly simulating rhythms” (Richard Kuipers, Variety).
