Thank you for joining fellow RAICES friends and allies in our fight to keep families together and welcome to our virtual screening room for The Fight, where $5 of your $12 rental fee will go toward supporting our work on behalf of immigrant children and families.

At this defining moment in American history, The Fight follows a scrappy team of heroic ACLU lawyers in an electrifying battle over abortion rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, and voting rights. At RAICES we advocate for many of the same issues depicted in the film, and have been serving vulnerable immigrants and refugees for over 30 years. So, when the “zero tolerance” policy was enacted and children fleeing violence in Central America were separated from their parents and detained in cages, we were ready to act. Attorneys and staff applied their expertise to reunite families, free children and families from detention, and help migrants get medical care. Sadly, the threat of family separation has arisen once again in the U.S., only this time it is against the backdrop of a global pandemic that is spreading like wildfire across ICE detention centers. Today, the physical and emotional well-being of approximately 120 children –– and 260 family members in all –– in ICE detention centers are on the line as judicial rulings are circumvented by the Department of Homeland Security and its disregard for human rights and dignity.

Immediately following the feature, all ticket buyers will have exclusive access to a pre-recorded conversation with RAICES’ expert legal team about their work on the frontlines of our battle to reunite families and free children and parents from detention together. Hear Andrea Meza, Director of Family Detention Services, lead a discussion with Manoj Govindaiah, Director of Litigation, and Julia Valero, Karnes Pro Bono Volunteer Manager, about their experience working with separated families from 2018 to today, and learn about the struggles of litigation and the realities migrant families face in the process. We cannot look away from the needs of parents and children whose imprisonment comes from their search for safety and security. Join us in the fight to keep families together.

The Fight is an inspiring, emotional insider look at how these important battles are fought and the legal gladiators on the front lines fighting them. Directors Elyse Steinberg, Josh Kriegman, and Eli Despres capture the rollercoaster ride of the thrill and defeat in these deeply human battles. When a mother is separated from her child, a soldier is threatened to lose his career, a young woman’s right to choose is imperiled at the pleasure of a government official, and the ability to exercise our basic right to vote is threatened, the consequences can be devastating to us and to future generations. The Fight celebrates the unsung heroes who fiercely work to protect our freedoms.

Immediately following the film there will be a pre-recorded discussion between Kerry Washington and the five ACLU lawyers featured in the film (Brigitte Amiri, Lee Gelernt, Dale Ho, Joshua Block and Chase Strangio). This conversation is exclusive to virtual cinema and in-theater engagements. Additionally, you’ll have free access to a live Q&A on Sun. 8/2 at 7:00pm ET with the filmmakers and lawyers, moderated by Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post. Click here to view the live Q&A page. (This will be also be archived and available beyond 8/2.)
