Synopsis

When Anna, a true-crime obsessed young woman, matches with her next hookup on Lovebug, she is shocked to discover that her date is actually the infamous Hitchfield Killer. Positively starstruck, she reacts as any hardcore fangirl would - with screaming and fawning. He reacts as any serial killer would - with stabbing and killing.]

Director's Statement

Obsession is a goofy parody of true crime at the surface, but, at its core, it is a story about how I felt within an abusive relationship. When I was consumed by this person, I lost myself. Everyone on the outside could see that I was in a bad situation, but I was blind to it because I wanted to be loved so badly.

Anna, to me, is just a girl that wants to be loved. And somehow, that can be even scarier than a (sexy) serial killer. I was also inspired by my fascination with true crime superfans. You know, those people who write love letters to Ted Bundy and have their "favorite" serial killers on a t-shirt like they're Mickey Mouse. I began exploring this connection between women's attraction to toxic (and sometimes killer) men and the frustration with the modern dating scene. So many women complain that men are emotionally unavailable or commitment-phobes (sound familiar?), and I felt the same way for a long time. I always found myself asking myself the same question after flings would end badly: "Why is this such a battle? What is so scary about dating me?"

Well, maybe, nothing is scarier than a woman who desires something really, really badly. Maybe, that's where our story is. And, so, Obsession was born.
