A poor woodcutter’s wife rescues a baby girl thrown from a train on its way to a death camp. Her husband, influenced by antisemitic propaganda comparing Jews to demons, poses an ultimatum, but soon grows to love the child, vowing to protect her. Oscar-winning French-Jewish director Michel Hazanavicius’ (The Artist) new animated film is a heart-stirring wartime fairytale, exploring the two faces of humanity – the unfathomable cruelty of the camps and the heroism of ordinary people who risked their own lives to save others.
