
French screen legend Daniel Auteuil stars as Joseph Haffmann, a Polish-born Jewish jeweller who sells his shop to his employee Francois when the Nazis enter Paris, in this stylish and suspenseful psychological thriller. Staying in the city a while longer after his wife and children have left for southern France, Joseph soon realises it is too late for him to follow his family and instead he is forced to hide in the basement of his old shop. Over time, his cordial relationship with Francois and his wife Blanche transforms – as Francois befriends Nazi officers, he feels less inclined to help Joseph, whereas Blanche’s growing affection towards him changes the course of both their lives.
