This compelling documentary recounts the Kafkaesque trial that took place in Israel, over the rights to Franz Kafka’s archive. After Kafka’s death, the then relatively unknown author’s will instructed his friend, Max Brod, to burn his works. Brod published them instead, and the rest is history. After Brod died in Israel, he left Kafka’s unpublished manuscripts and papers to his secretary, Esther Hoffe. The film explores the labyrinthine legal proceedings that ensued when the National Library of Israel attempted to secure ownership of the archive from Esther’s daughter, Eva.
