When Hamas militants broke into the home of Rachel and David Edri in the southern city of Ofakim on 7 October, it was Rachel’s resourcefulness, resilience and hospitality that saved them. Thinking of the five terrorists as guests, she offered them food and drink, keeping calm even when her son, a police officer, arrived at the scene. In the days following, Edri became a symbol of bravery, and the recipe for the cookies she served to the terrorists a huge hit. In Israeli filmmaker Zohar Wagner’s (Savoy, UKJFF 2023) absorbing new film, real-life Rachel gives direction to the actress who plays her – a unique artistic decision which is also a form of therapeutic reenactment: by taking responsibility for the scenes, Edri allows herself – and the viewers – the opportunity to process the traumatic events of that day, and to be, at last, on the road to healing.
