This murder mystery opens with a young child experiencing terrifying visions. Those visions end up in tragedy with everyone around them killed. One begins to wonder if this innocent-looking kid is the target of evil powers or the offspring of the devil.
Fast forward many years later, we experience a blossoming romance between Khanh (Hoàng Thuỳ Linh), a single mother, and Lam (B Trần), a lowly employee in the entertainment business. There are sparks, but then a murder puts their attraction to the test. The gory death of young man in the slums gets pinned on to Khanh, who merely wants to protect her child from the spiral of events. She rushes off into night with her child and Lam to escape persecution. The chase is on to find the real killer.
Taking matters into his own hands, Lam digs deeper to get to the heart of the crime. But as more evidence builds against Khanh, he begins to wonder if she really is the killer. Lam increasingly begins to doubt if he is doing the right thing by protecting a murder suspect. This film asks if anyone is truly innocent, even when we wish that to be so. How much are we willing to do to protect those we love? A vicious cycle escalates as the innocent and the suspect bind together.
The Instrument of Murder, directed by Tạ Nguyên Hiệp in his directorial debut, brings all the thrills of an action drama and the scares of a horror psychological movie. Will we encounter a hero or a monster in the finale? Alongside the two leads as a pair of star-crossed lovers, the film also stars Trinh Thang Binh and Hứa Vĩ Văn.
