James Q. Chan and Santhosh Daniel’s documentary short film Bloodline explores Tu David Phu's culinary career as a first-generation Vietnamese American, reflecting his parents' refugee experience during the Vietnam War. Phu's culinary bloodline was mainly inspired by his mother's cooking and his father's fisherman’s skills from Phú Quốc (the home of an esteemed fish sauce). His parents' background teaches him to utilize specific ingredients into an "essence" of incredibly delicious dishes rather than excluding them as might have been advised in a more formal culinary environment. The film launches into an analysis regarding the tensions between Western cuisine and the Vietnamese tradition that Phu looks to uphold.
