In the town Tamil Nadu exists Coimbatore, a small Muslim community lives alongside the Hindu population. Nasir is a Muslim family man who struggles to make ends meet for mother Fatima, wife Taj, and nephew Iqbal who live with him in a closely populated ghetto. His story emerges through the detailed observation of his vicinity over one particular day. As his day unfolds, we find him a nimble romantic and lover of poetry and music. With serene, visually pleasing imagery of the everyday, Director Arun Karthick brings audiences fully into Nasir’s mundane world. Still, off-screen news reports and casual conversations remind viewers of the violence that hangs in the peripheries. Discussion with producer Mathivanan Rajendran, moderated by Aswin Punathambekar (UVA) to follow.

Nasir Is part of the Middle Eastern & South Asian Film Series supported by UVA Arts Council: Enriching the Arts on Grounds, the Institute of the Humanities and Global Culture, and UVA Department of Middle Eastern & South Asian Languages & Cultures
