An eccentric scientist who uses magic to freeze people in often-embarrassing positions is the subject of this wonderfully offbeat 1925 sci-fi comedy. René Clair’s groundbreaking silent film centres on a worker who finds himself in a fantasy where he uses a ray gun to zap the citizens of Paris into a slumber. That he unleashes his superpowers from the top of the Eiffel Tower only adds to the sense of futuristic fun.
