Alice Rahon (1904-1987), peintre et poète, née en Franche-Comté, s'invente un lieu et une année de naissance imaginaire (1916, en Bretagne). Artiste voyageuse, elle parcourt l'Inde, le Liban et Cuba. A Paris, elle rencontre Breton, Man Ray, Picasso et Eluard. Elle participe aux activités du groupe surréaliste avec son mari, l'artiste autrichien Wolfgang Paalen. En 1939, en compagnie de leur amie photographe et mécène Eva Sulzer, ils entreprennent un voyage de l'Alaska jusqu'au Mexique pour découvrir les "paysages totémiques" amérindiens. Invités par Frida Kahlo, ils s'installent à Mexico..."la grandeur morose de ce haut plateau où la mort est constamment plus présente que la vie, sa singulière qualité astéroïde..." José Pierre.

Influencée par l'exubérance des couleurs locales, elle devient peintre. Elle cherche à retrouver le souffle magique des peintures pariétales et des objets totémiques, à s'approcher du savoir shamanique... afin de pouvoir assister à l'apparition des esprits et des formes. Elle crée des tableaux-poèmes, associant dans une même œuvre deux expressions différentes: l'une picturale et l'autre écrite. "Sa place dans l'histoire de l'art mexicain, entre le surréalisme et l'émergence de l'art abstrait, demeure mal définie, mais son côté explorateur et innovateur assure la durabilité de son œuvre." The painter and poet Alice Rahon (1904-1987), born in the Frenchregion of France-Comté, invented a fictitious birth date and place (1916, Brittany). A nomad-artist, she travelle across India, Lebanon and Cuba.

In Paris, she met Breton, Man Ray, Picasso and Eluard. She and her husband the Austrian artist Wolfgang Paalen were part of the group of Surrealists. In 1939, in the company of her friend and patron, photographer Eva Sulzer, they travelled from Alaska all the way to Mexico to discover the "totemic landscapes" of the Native Americans.

Upon an invitation from Frida Kahlo, they moved to Mexico... the morose grandeur of this high plain where death is always more present than life, its singular quality of an asteroid...

Influenced by the vibrant local colours, she became a painter. She sought out the magic breath in rock paintings and totemic objects, sought to reach shamanic knowledge... in order to witness the appearance of spirits and forms. She created poem-paintings, combining in a single work two different types of expression - one of images and the other writing.

En París, conoce a Breton, Man Ray, Picasso y Eluard. Participa en las actividades del grupo surrealista junto a su marido, el artista austriaco Wolfgang Paalen. En 1939, en compañía de su amiga fotógrafa y mecenas Eva Sulzer comienza un viaje desde Alaska hasta México para descubrir los "paisajes totémicos" amerindios.

Influenciada por la exuberancia de los colores locales, se convierte a la pintura. Intenta recuperar el hálito mágico de las pinturas parietales y los objetos totémicos, vinculado al conocimiento chamánico... para poder asistir a la aparición de los espíritus y las formas. Crea cuadros-poemas, que asocian en una misma obra dos expresiones distintas: una pictórica y otra escrita.
