« Je suis né pour lâcher les freins du ciel » écrivait Matta (1911-2002). Il est né au Chili et a vécu en France, aux États-Unis et en Italie. Ses origines basques le destinait à l’errance et aux voyages. Il était un citoyen du monde. Il a brillamment représenté la nouvelle génération des peintres surréalistes et a ouvert de nouvelles perspectives à l’automatisme avec la morphologie psychologique. Matta était habité par inlassable curiosité et sa culture encyclopédique s’étendait de la littérature à la poésie, de la mythologie à l’histoire, des mathématiques à l’astrophysique, de l’ethnologie à l’archéologie, de la botanique à l’œnologie. Sa création s’ouvrait à tous les supports, architecture, peinture, dessin, sculpture,

gravure, lithographie, eau-forte, céramique, design de mobilier etc. Il œuvrait pour une révolution du regard. Sa créativité explosive et volcanique, son engagement révolutionnaire et sa vision cosmique du monde basée sur le changement et la conscience d’être au monde, placent Matta dans le panthéon des grands artistes du 20e siècle.

"I was born to release the brakes of the sky," wrote Matta (1911-2002). He was born in Chile and lived in France, the United States, and Italy. His Basque origins destined him to wander and travel. He was a citizen of the world. He brilliantly represented the new generation of surrealist painters and opened new perspectives in automatism with psychological morphology. Matta was driven by an unrelenting curiosity, and his encyclopedic knowledge spanned from literature to poetry, mythology to history, mathematics to astrophysics, ethnology to archaeology, and botany to oenology. His work embraced all mediums: architecture, painting, drawing, sculpture, engraving, lithography, etching, ceramics, furniture design, etc. He worked for a revolution of the gaze.
