A masterful work of lyrical slow cinema, still/here travels through the desolate wasteland of a once thriving Black community in St. Louis to construct a powerfully evocative meditation on loss and entropic destruction. Christopher Harris makes remarkable use of black and white 16mm to create richly sensory and melancholy space-images that resonate with deep absence and the sounds of unidentified voices and an unexplained, uncanny telephone that is never answered. Lingering in abandoned houses, partially erased cityscapes and, especially poignantly, a decaying movie theater, still/here offers a meditation on architecture as vital memory and the ruin as the scene of an insidious crime too diffuse to be persecuted.
