Josefina Moreno has been working in the coffee fields of Central America since the age of ten. Over the years, she has developed an olfactory expertise that allows her to evaluate and appreciate coffee beans with precision. This has come in handy as she has grown up within the industry. Now that she is 18, she is coveted, acting as a coffee taster in coffee bean competitions and sought out by coffee companies to work on their behalf identifying the best beans for cultivation and export.

Anyone who has ever enjoyed inhaling the inspiring aroma of a fine cup of java in the morning will love the sights and sounds of this movie. The film is lush and beautiful, despite the underlying poverty of many of the natives. But a snake is in this Garden of Eden, in the form of toxic masculinity. It threatens Josefina when she is most poised for greatness in her field.

This is an artful evocation of a world that we have rarely seen on film, and a reminder that evil is malevolent, and can even be found in the lush coffee fields of Latin America. Co-producer Andy Hodgson is a WFF alumnus from 2018, when he presented his film WOODLAND, which was set on an island in the Pacific Northwest, while THE WHISPER OF SILENCE is quite a world away.
