A common theme in Maritime cinema is the dysfunctional family getting together for some occasion in the town or rural area where they grew up in. This one, about three sisters getting together for a wedding, is different because it tells that story from an entirely female point of view as the writer, producer, director, and cast are all female. As a result, there is a delicacy of observation and compassion for the characters that is rarely found to the same degree in male-driven story-telling.

Based on a play, the film tells the story of three sisters who suffered abandonment at a young age. Gwen (played by Emily Bridger) returns for her younger sister’s wedding in St. John’s Newfoundland. Janet, the younger sister who is getting married, tries to hide the family’s problems, while sibling Kay just creates chaos wherever she goes. Kay has a daughter, Billie, whom she doesn’t pay much attention to. Aunt Maureen is around, but mother is absent. The dynamic leads up to a hellish wedding reception.

For these three sisters, unresolved conflicts, jealousies and secrets remain buried just beneath the surface. The three lead actresses not only play siblings on screen, but are reportedly best of friends in real life, which may account for their undeniable rapport. Most viewers, if they are honest, will recognize some part of themselves in this drama about a broken-up family struggling to reunite.
