Shoe-making and shoe repair was once an extensive and proud, blue-collar industry that proliferated throughout all parts of American life. Often picked up by recent immigrants and other working class groups, shoe repair became an avenue for steady middle-class lifestyle and possible social mobility for future generations. As the 20th century progressed into the 21st, the number of shoe repair shops dwindled. One microcosm of this issue can be seen in Ithaca, a small city in upstate New York that used to have a dozen shoe repair shops. Aurora Shoe Repair and its owner, Eddie Volpicelli, are the last remaining shop in Ithaca. As Eddie nears retirement age, he wants to take a break, but has never been busier as the only cobbler in town. This film showcases Eddie reflecting on his long career as a cobbler as he prepares to close the shop for two months, the longest vacation he's ever taken.
