Set in Lagos, Eyimofe (This is My Desire) follows the separate stories of Mofe, a factory technician, and Rosa, a hairdresser and bartender, as they navigate the vicissitudes of city life while dreaming of what each believes will be a better life in Spain (Mofe) and Italy (Rosa). For both protagonists, plans to emigrate are frustrated by the structural obstacles and everyday perils that beset those at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder, from life-threatening work conditions and predatory migration consultants to pervy landlords and bad boyfriends. Expertly shot amid the hustle and bustle of Lagos-by-day and Lagos-by-night, Eyimofe is a subtle yet captivating portrait of two strangers trying to leave a city that seems determined to keep them.

Join African and African American Studies professors Ayo A. Coly and Jesse Weaver Shipley for a panel discussion of Eyimofe and You Will Die at Twenty in the broader context of contemporary African cinema on Wednesday, May 26 at 8 pm. You will be sent the Zoom link if you purchase a ticket to either screening (or you can RSVP here).
