Over his iconic career, Frank Zappa exemplified the power and necessity of independent creativity and imagination in pushing music and the cultural conversation forward. Alex Winter’s new film ZAPPA (a favorite of Jon Fishman’s!) is coming out on Friday, Nov. 27th.
We are excited to team up with Magnolia Pictures to give you a chance to watch the film and support the WaterWheel Foundation at the same time. $5 of your $12 rental fee will go directly to us, to aid our efforts in supporting nonprofits around the country. Since its creation in 1997, WaterWheel has supported a wide variety of work including environmental causes with a focus on clean water; social services such as food insecurity, homelessness, healthcare for the needy and addiction recovery; and social and environmental justice efforts. Just this year, with your help, we have donated over $1,000,000 already. We look forward to continuing this effort with this partnership – plus you get to watch a great doc on a truly legendary musician.
With unfettered access to the Zappa Vault, and the archival footage contained within, ZAPPA explores the private life behind the mammoth musical career that never shied away from the political turbulence of its time. Alex Winter’s assembly features appearances by Frank’s widow Gail Zappa and several of Frank’s musical collaborators including Mike Keneally, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Pamela Des Barres, Bunk Gardner, David Harrington, Scott Thunes, Ruth Underwood, Ray White and others.
Following the feature, audiences will be treated to previously unseen footage directly from the Zappa Vault – intimate backstage footage of the band, and a blistering live performance from 1974.
