Ninni la tibikix iżjed, ninni Ġesù Bambin

How many times have we heard this Christmas carol, which also is a lullaby? In fact, ninni is the Maltese word parents use with their babies and toddlers when it is time for them to sleep. Ninni is etymologically derived from the Italian word ninnare, meaning “to lull a baby to sleep”. Consequently, Ninni, ninni is a multi-disciplinary project that amalgamates the world of jazz and animation into one and exploring how lullabies from around the world cater the meaning of the phrase.

While Ninni the polar bear is being sung to calm down and be put to sleep by his mother, he dreams of going onto a journey to search for a new home where they could rest in. Through his journey, Ninni discovers several lullabies from around the world, interpreted by a jazz combo. The audience will experience renditions of these lullabies, while Ninni’s journey will be portrayed through the medium of animation. The musical aspect and the animated aspect of the project will flow from one to another – the animation will purposely be silent throughout most of its duration. You, the audience will be asked and guided to find or create objects in your own homes and when prompted, create sounds throughout each animation. In other words, you will be immersed into the project as well by becoming our very own foley artists.

So, make yourselves comfortable and let yourselves embark onto Ninni’s venture.
