You may ask yourself, "Haven't I heard and seen enough about COVID-19 and vaccines, and can't I just take a break from that?" Well, you could, but you'd really be missing out. In Trusted Messenger, Twin Cities filmmaker Chris Newberry takes the time to explore why some individuals in communities of color are reluctant to get the COVID vaccine, and what health care professionals across Minnesota are doing to convince them to vaccinate-- like maybe trying to win over a skeptical but respected North Side Minneapolis barber. The people Chris shows us in his film teach us that we have to reject false information about vaccines, but we also have to reject the automatic demonization of all people who have hesitancies about them. This is a serious subject but an enjoyable film. Chris is a good storyteller-- it's why he won the Big Water Audience Favorite Award in 2014 for his film, American Heart.

TRUSTED MESSENGER This film follows a diverse ensemble of health care professionals as they set out to convince at-risk communities across Minnesota to trust a health system that has historically failed them.

At the Big Water Film Festival we've received- and shown- lots of films over the years about water quality, water pollution, water scarcity, water management-- a lot of people read our name as a big film festival about water, even though it's really a reference to the Big Water we live next to, Gitchi Gami, Lake Superior. The double meaning is apt, since living where we do we are very conscious of the role of water in life. But this film takes all that a step further, to look at a woman in whom the water around her lives, who feels its very vibrations, who is inseparable from water, and who can apply this unique sensitivity to siting wells as a dowser. But her granddaughter knows nothing of this until she visits. Shot in and around Treviso, Italy, a city of canals, the location itself speaks to the main characters' connection to water.

TRE VISI A young woman comes home to assist her ailing grandmother, and discovers that her grandmother's relation to the water around her is much more than she ever knew.

When two cut-throat pirates steal their captain’s treasure map in hopes of having all the treasure to themselves, they discover they have vastly different visions of what it means to be a pirate. Featuring Ashland native Don Scribner in full pirate regalia, Waylaid takes us on a treasure quest like no other.

We have all learned to roll our eyes at every hidden treasure film, especially the ones that actually pretend to take themselves seriously. We also love to poke fun at Southern California. This is a beautiful spoof on the "Lost [fill in the blank]" genre. Watch as a photographer and an adventurer discover that the abandoned shopping carts in LA's San Fernando Valley lead to a hidden cave off of Sepulveda Boulevard with a lost treasure inside - guarded by a dragon! The sheer silliness of this film will make you laugh.
