Lake Superior ice fishermen, pay attention! This could happen to you! In Cold Storage, a lonely fisherman discovers his prehistoric counterpart frozen in the ice, takes him back to the cabin, and when the old fellow thaws out the fisherman discovers he has a newfound soul brother. The dance of the two fishermen pays homage to the virtuosic physical performances and melancholy comedy of the classic silent screen, and like those great old silent movies will make you laugh and, even if you are surrounded by an arctic- or Lake Superior- chill, warm your heart.

COLD STORAGE A lonely fisherman finds a prehistoric body frozen in the ice. He pops a beer by his frozen chum-- and life gets interesting.

All would agree that the right to safe and legal abortion in the U.S. is under the most serious attack in 50 years. Some might cheer this situation while others deplore it. But if pre-Roe history is any guide, it seems certain that making abortion illegal will not end abortions but merely push them underground, with women enduring unsafe and traumatic procedures. This film, set in Canada in a near future where legal abortion is not available, dramatizes one woman's harrowing attempt to end her pregnancy. The director, Marianne Farley, received an Oscar nomination for her 2019 film, Marguerite, which we showed that year at Big Water.

FRIMAS In a near future where abortion is no longer legal, one woman endures an unsafe and traumatic procedure to end her pregnancy.

We've seen Russ at Big Water before-- his 2015 film, Occupants, was well-received here. In Routine, Cassie's life during a mysterious pandemic has become, well, routine. But when she realizes she is out of coffee-- she would kill for a cup of joe-- she decides it's worth the risk to venture outside, even though there is a lockdown and the radio warns against going out. Cassie puts on her personal protective gear and out she goes. When Cassie leaves her apartment and enters an animated world the effect is like when Dorothy lands in Oz and the film suddenly turns from black and white into color. Cassie is a hero for a pandemic era!

Routine

ROUTINE: Sometimes even the most careful of us are tempted to break lock-down rules during a pandemic-- but in this film the dangers are unavoidable.

Synchronized ice skating has been empowering generations of women since 1956, but remains ignored by the larger sports world. Life in Synchro brings us on a journey with women of all ages from all over the United States as they push their teams and themselves to excellence, hoping someday their ice skating dreams will become Olympic dreams.
