SFA’s 23rd Fall Symposium begins with Visions, invoking myths and memories of the past to craft an intentional future for our region. Poet Ada Limón shares original verse awash in chocolate sunflowers and cast-iron cornbread, in which food attempts to still time. Bartender Claire Sprouse mixes three cocktails for a sustainable future, each honoring a Black woman or man building resistance and awareness around climate change. See a South long obscured through the work of contemporary photographers who upend traditional narratives, guided by teacher and essayist Ralph Eubanks. Last, author Caleb Johnson reads a letter to his unborn son, hoping he will taste wild ramps and sour apples and worrying that, because of ongoing environmental devastation, he will never know a wild Gulf oyster.
Caleb Johnson is the author of the 2018 novel Treeborne, a celebration and reminder of how the past tangles with the future that received an honorable mention for the Southern Book Prize. An Alabama native, Caleb has worked as a newspaper reporter, janitor, middle-school teacher, and whole-animal butcher. He currently teaches writing at Appalachian State University.
