This terrific set of animated films has a little bit of everything—including two young men training to be Olympic divers, a transitioning pirate, a night in a queer bar in Paris, a mother wanting the best for her son, and a mysterious neighborhood fox.
Having washed ashore after a shipwreck, a young pirate meets a curious mermaid. They help each other grow as the pirate teaches the mermaid how to be a swashbuckler, and the mermaid teaches the pirate how to be themself. But conflict arises when the pirate's crew comes back searching for them. The Little Piratemaid was Luke Beatrice's senior thesis project at Lesley University. The original, super short version was released in film festivals in 2023. After the project won several awards, Luke made the full, extended version (twice the length of the original) without the confines of a school project. The new short will be submitted to film festivals over the course of 2024.
