Filmmaker Angelo Madsen Minax returns to his childhood home in Michigan with the intent to learn more about his family’s entanglement with the justice system. After the death of his young niece and accusations that the family might somehow have been involved, he has many questions that won’t have clear answers. While interviewing his family, the conversations turn toward the complicated nature of family issues. Generational addiction, childhood bullying, religious trauma, gender identity and layers of pain get explored. Throughout the film, Angelo includes his mother, father and grieving sister to share their own stories and perspectives with care and sensitivity, while never shying away from being vulnerable himself. Like all families, there are injuries, and in NORTH BY CURRENT the camera is used as a tool to reveal and heal.
