When even outsider comics didn’t seem to include them, these queer artists picked up pens and used them as chisels, carving out a space in the culture where they could see themselves and be seen by others. Guided by the artwork, Vivian Kleiman’s wonderfully immersive look at the history of queer comics subsumes the arc of the modern liberation movement, with comics responding to landmark political and historical events, unafraid of the difficult conversations surrounding representation, intersectionality and community. As these comics became more readily available to the next generation, they would incite a glorious chain reaction, with each new artist motivated by the desire to represent the specificity of their own experience. Revel in this extraordinary opportunity to spend quality time with Alison Bechdel (FUN HOME) and prepare to meet new favorites.
