A decade ago, Nick Mullins was one of the most promising skateboarders to come from the Midwest. Then, overnight it all changed. Shot by two strangers on weekends, across three states over two years, this is a story of pain, grit, fight, uncertainty, fear, desperation, and, most importantly, love.

Director’s Statement: Nicholas Maher

If you know me you know this story has been my life for the last two years. Driving from Chicago or Detroit to Genoa, Ohio, with a car stacked full of camera stuff to go spend a few hours piecing together Nick Mullin's story one weekend at a time. I met him after reading a newspaper article about his injury and could have never expected that we’d become so close.

It was surprisingly easy to get his cell number; his friend named in said newspaper article saying, “Oh yeah, Nick? He’s the best! You’d love him. Here's his number!” Nick didn’t seem interested at first in being part of a film about himself but eventually opened up and began to tell me about his life. I couldn‘t write it all down fast enough. I pushed and eventually, he caved. He was genuine and humble. Just a real person. Weeks after that conversation we would start shooting a documentary that, now, two years later is finally done.
