It was the perfect storm.
A global pandemic. An app aspiring to democratize trading.
A group of Reddit users stuck at home with stimulus dollars to burn. And a video game company on its last legs.
DIAMOND HANDS is the incredible true story of how an army of retail traders rallied around GameStop to rock our financial system.
This is the legend of WallStreetBets.
Directors Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper
Director's Statement from Drea Cooper:
For a long time, I thought the stock market reflected the state of the economy, consumer sentiment and the reality of the current moment. During the pandemic, when millions were unemployed and stuck at home, the stock market should have tanked but instead it was on fire. 2020 saw some of the biggest gains in history. Damn, I needed a new theory. If the stock market could produce insane gains during a pandemic, was it just a poorly regulated casino? Maybe.
Then came the GameStop Short Squeeze. All of a sudden my casino theory had a chance. GameStop showed us that the system is vulnerable to manipulation by anyone with money and power - hedge funds, short sellers, market makers, brokers - and wait for it… vulnerable to a populist uprising that started on the subreddit WallStreetBets. The difference between you and me and the WallStreetBets crew: they figured out how to win at the casino.
