Since the bow and arrow humans have been distancing themselves from the horrors of war. Now with drones, robots and artificial intelligence, battles are waged continents away and the decision whether to kill or let live is increasingly out of human hands. BATTLES BEYOND THE HORIZON is a feature-length documentary film by Kari Barber set in the Nevada desert and across the world featuring interviews with top experts on the ethics of war. The film follows protestors at Creech Air Force Base near Las Vegas as they face arrest and trial while weaving in the history of the U.S. drone program across four presidencies as we march forward into a world where eventually artificial intelligence may make the decision to kill and robots will carry out those orders.

However important that question may be, Sydney sees the film more as an exploration of suspicion, mistrust, and identity, as the five participants begin to challenge their perception of each other and of themselves. Estuas explores a parallel world of artificial intelligence and generative transmissions of life from estuarine ecosystems as a metaphor for synthesis. Live satellite signals are recomposed from space broadcasts to structure a soundscape eclipsed by silence. The satellite remapping of image details collides with multidimensional formed creatures allowing convergence to occur between sonic and image. This multilayered experience culminates in the emergence of synthetic macrocosm and microcosmic amalgamations emblematic of systems teeming with life.
