What begins as a flirtatious fib snowball into a wild tangle of lies, ensnaring two couples in a comedy of errors, in this breezy, sexy German rom-com. Though not a member of the tribe, Anne (Verena Altenberger) has immersed herself in the Jewish world to pay off a karmic debt run up by her grandparents, profiteers who began an antiquities business in Germany shortly before the war. She runs a small Berlin bookstore specializing in Judaica and volunteers at a Jewish retirement home, helping a Holocaust survivor publicize his memoir. At a party one evening, awkward Anne meets Daniel (Maxim Mehmet), a newly single gynaecologist just venturing back into dating. Instantly wise to Anne’s pseudo-Semitism, he impulsively feigns being Jewish to impress her, a harmless enough ploy until he develops real romantic feelings. With Anne’s entire life tied to her faux identity, Daniel is compelled to exit the hole he’s dug for himself. A quartet of funny and entirely winning characters includes Anne’s best friend, Laura (Lisa Wagner), a gorgeous blonde masseuse, and Tobias (Lasse Myhr), a handsome, Jewish emergency room doctor. A clever take on social appropriation and historical guilt, this witty, warmhearted look at modern love from award-winning director Wolfang Murnberger (My Best Enemy) will strike right at the heart.

“From the jump, Wolfgang Murnberger’s “Love & Mazel Tov” seems like a worthy addition to the quirky romantic comedy canon. As an offbeat, slightly jaunty groove plays over the film’s opening moments, its four main characters take turns introducing themselves to the audience.” - Sammie Purcell, Reporternewspapers.net
