‘Mulsotan-The Rooted' is a documentary on the non-violent struggle of the Vasava tribal community in south Gujarat for their land and forest rights. The film delves into the 32-year-old struggle of the community, capturing the stories hardships, evictions and other troubles that will find parallels in the experience of tribal and indigenous populations worldwide. Littered with bureaucratic and legislative obstacles, this community meticulously navigates the path to obtain their rightful land titles using technology and nonviolent-protests Gujarat is the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi and this film shows how the Gandhi’s principles, in this modern day and age, still find relevance in the day-to-day struggles of even the most vulnerable of communities.

This struggle was supported by Ms Trupti Parekh and other colleagues of Action Research in Community Health and Development (also known as ARCH- Vahini). ARCH-Vahini has been working in the tribal areas of Gujarat from 1980s in the fields of community health, education and land rights. It played a crucial role in the struggle for proper rehabilitation of the tribal families who lost their lands in the Sardar Sarovar Project on Narmada river and also in the enactment of Forest Rights Act of 2006, which for the first time recognizes the rights of the tribal communities on their lands and forest resources.
