The short films Gita GovindaField-Trip, and Scenes from a Sketchbook use radically different approaches to the 17th-century painter Nainsukh (the subject of Dutta’s feature of the same name) and his descendants’ work. Scenes from a Sketchbook takes multiple stabs at dramatizing the paintings, playfully evoking the quixotic nature of Dutta’s enterprise as well as Nainsukh’s own habit of leaving traces of his process in the completed work. Description by Max Goldberg, courtesy of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.
