The short films Gita Govinda, Field-Trip, and Scenes from a Sketchbook use radically different approaches to the 17th-century painter Nainsukh (the subject of Dutta’s feature of the same name) and his descendants’ work. Scenes from a Sketchbook takes multiple stabs at dramatizing the paintings, playfully evoking the quixotic nature of Dutta’s enterprise as well as Nainsukh’s own habit of leaving traces of his process in the completed work.
